JOB OVERVIEW:
The Cytoscreener, as a part of the larger Laboratory team, is responsible for the preparation of Cytology slides and the diagnosis of cellular abnormalities and disease processes by the application of the latest scientific knowledge using the most up-to-date equipment available. The Cytoscreener is primarily responsible for screening cervical (Gyn) and Non Gyn cytology samples.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ROLE:
•Works and liaises with the Pathologist, Laboratory Manager Senior Technologists, nurses and other medical staff
•Screens cytology samples according to departmental protocols and policy
•Prepares Cytology slides and diagnoses cellular abnormalities and disease processes. Primarily responsible for screening cervical (Gyn) and non-Gyn samples
•Plans and organizes cytology workload in order to achieve daily targets
•Reviews and undertakes audit of own work
•Plans and undertakes laboratory audit as scheduled by Laboratory Manager
•Screens slides within set guidelines
•Conducts rapid reviews on cervical samples according to departmental protocols and policy and refers to Pathologist if considered to be abnormal
•Aids the Physician during Fine Needle Aspiration procedure.
•Follows appropriate patient identification processes and protocols.
•Responsible for reporting and signing out (validation) negative cervical sample results.
•Refers inadequate and abnormal samples to pathologist for checking.
•Seeks advice from pathologist on cases which may cause screener concern.
•Uses the Pathology IT system to enter results accurately, log processes and to look up previous cytology and histology results
•Determines where to find records of previous results which may affect patient management
•Reviews own samples which were not agreed by the consultant staff
•Prioritizes screening workload to achieve daily targets
•Participates in all aspects of internal and external quality assurance (including CAP)
•Participates in departmental audit and method development
•Contributes to the formulation and review of standard operating procedures (SOP’s)
•Works within the standard operating procedures of the department
•Follows all policies and recommendations required for accreditation by College of American Pathologist (CAP)
•Follows all Laboratory health and safety policies
•Complies with local policies for the safe, secure and confidential processing and storage of patient and other laboratory information
•Completes error log, non-conformance or incident report forms when necessary
•Participates in stock-take and order reagents when stocks are low
•Minimizes wastage of materials used in the laboratory by appropriate stock rotation and good laboratory technique.
•Retrieves and files request forms and slides.
•Responsible for the production and accurate entry of cervical sample results on Pathology IT system
•Checks patient demographics on IT system prior to validation and forwards any required amendments to the relevant IT area for updating if incorrect
•Responsible for validating negative cervical sample results on IT system
