Job Purpose:
To manage the needs of all the individual business units and the wider Corporation as it pertains to provision of sound legal advice and expertise on laws, legislative parameters, and regulatory environment implications on people, processes and strategic growth agenda of the organisation.
To ensure that the decision makers are provided most timely and relevant information that prioritises protection of Company interests, minimises transactional and/or strategic risk exposure and facilitates coverage against non-compliance whilst enabling the business needs.
To be the strategic business partner and view provision of legal services as an essential enabler of sustainable business growth, and also to ensure effective and streamlined legal operations as it pertains to effective follow-up on lawsuits, litigation or claims involving the Company so that the Company’s position is strongly represented and its commercial interests are protected.
Sector Strategy Formulation
• As a senior member of the Shared Services sector team contributes to the formulation and implementation of the sector strategy and plans as befitting the department and business line needs and objectives
Legal Research
• Ensures outcomes from legal research and past cases are taken into account when relevant, in the formulation of new cases and legal advice
• Advises on the application of the appropriate law and legal provision in case of any dispute or legal notice
Interpretation of laws and Provision of Legal Advice
• Fully understands the business requirements and leverages expertise of the law to provide sound advice and guidance on best course of action to be taken to ensure that end-state corporate objectives are delivered on time with minimal risk
• Ensures effective interpretation and explanation of provisions of applicable laws and regulations to Company staff so that they understand the implications thoroughly
• Ensures regular update and awareness on existing, new and/or amendments to laws and regulations ensuring all legal angles that are likely to have consequences to the business, people and company policies are highlighted proactively, studied in detail and address as part of the decion making process
Operational Requirements
• Ensure that the Company’s properties, IP, revenues, etc. are adequately covered by appropriate trademarks, licensing and insurance at all times and maintains a streamlined and rigorous process for regular registrations, renewals, approvals and amendments without operational delays.
• Ensures provision of best legal litigation services as it pertains to dealing with business issues, HR related matters, commercial and/or government requirements - actively tarcks and monitors delivery timelines, service levels and continuously strives to improve efficiency and delivery levels
• Ensures the Company’s position is well-represented, and its interests always prioritised in court and in discussion with external legal counsels of other organisations; and adopt a fair and equitable legally sound stance in matters pertaining to indivuduals employed by the organisation
• Decides on outsourcing of legal matters that requires deeper expertise level than that available in house But maintains complete control of the deliverables, quality and track record of performance
• Manages the outsourcing of legal services (including selection, fees and payment terms) whenever needed
Operational Efficiency & Management
• Streamlines and reduces operational processes and paperwork where possible without compromising on compliance requirements - for eg. Introducing shared portal services, standardising templates and formats of legal and law related documents / formats used internally within the Company (such as contracts and agreements) to ensure consistency and quality in presentation etc.
