The Editor is responsible for the writing section of the magazine. The main role is to assist the Editor-in-Chief in formulating magazine policy; plans, coordinates, and directs editorial activities; assist in selecting and preparing material for publication in magazines.
Some of the key areas of responsibility:
• Some typical work activities include writing articles, amending (re-writing of editing) articles, summarizing written material, and organizing and researching projects to tight deadlines.
• Duties could also include, reading copies to detect errors in spelling and punctuation. Verifying facts, dates, and statistics.
• May write or rewrite headlines, captions, columns, articles, and stories according to publication requirements and editorial policy. Reading pages once in layout; making appropriate adjustments.
• Initiate or reply to correspondence regarding material published or being considered for publication.
• Creating editorial calendar in conjunction with publisher and staff.
• Utilizing existing relationships to leverage interviews/exclusives. Setting up and coordination of interviews for subjects.
• Working with all writers to develop direction of stories, interview questions, etc.
• If a specific editor not in place (i.e. copy editor, fashion editor), take on the duties of that editor.
• Providing assistance to all writers and staff wherever needed during editorial process
• Working with creative/art directors to ensure editorial matches their vision
• May handle press, including radio/TV/print interviews
• Assist publisher in various meetings outside of the editorial department.
• Networking within the publishing/media industry to increase visibility and viability of the magazine
