A safety manager's job is to help prevent accidents on the job.

Safety managers work in a variety of companies. The job description for a safety manager will vary from company to company but contains similar qualifications.

Education and experience are always required. Specialized training, knowledge of the particular industry, and the ability to perform other jobs in conjunction with safety are often required, as well.



Duties

•A safety manager will usually perform all or most of the following duties: develop or monitor the written safety programs of the company; oversee work sites and procedures to help prevent workplace injuries; work with management to keep costly accidents and illnesses to a minimum; investigate accidents; work with safety committees.

The safety manager is the liaison between management and the workers. Leadership, communication, and record-keeping help keep a close safety-conscious link among all levels of the workplace.

Education

•A college education is usually a main requirement for a safety manager. Some companies may insist on a master's, while others will accept a bachelor's. In some cases, an associate's degree will suffice. While the field of the college degree can vary, safety engineering or a similar discipline is often the requirement.

a safety manager is actively involved in specific projects, or acts as the "competent person" on any job site, he must have completed the Occupational Safety and Health Administration 10-hour or 30-hour course. Many companies require safety professionals to take OSHA 30-hour training in order to be able to train others. Some companies bring in an outside trainer to do OSHA training for employees.

An employer may require an applicant to be a Certified Safety Professional. This certificate, earned at a college or online, has certain requirements that must be met before one begins this program. At least a bachelor's degree and several years of experience are the main requirements.

Job-specific certifications may also be required, such as hazmat training for chemicals, forklift or scaffold safety, and other issues.



Experience is almost always required before a safety manager is hired. In some instances, a person may work his way up the ladder in the corporation and be qualified to assume the position of safety manager.

Often, a safety manager candidate must have three or more years of verifiable experience in the manufacturing, construction, or other field the company is involved in. A hiring officer may ask for specific instances where the candidate has improved another company's accident and worker's compensation instances.

Other experience might include: working with hazardous materials, confined space entry, lock-out/tag-out procedures; training and orienting workers; demonstrating problem-solving abilities; developing written safety programs; conducting tailgate training sessions on a regular basis; and overseeing worker rescue operations or fire emergencies.
